Meet the Teacher: Katie Mason
Where did you train / study as a dancer / teacher?
I studied BA Hons Dance at University of Chichester, which gave me a in-depth knowledge of the dance industry and realised there was more to just performing. It was here I decided to take the community dance modules. I then went on to study the Teaching Dance Diploma at Trinity Laban.
Describe your most inspirational teacher
I am constantly inspired by my fellow Animateurs who will use Rambert repertoire in the most imaginative and creative ways. Their dedication and passion for their job is inspiring alone and they’re continuously coming up with new ideas and choreographing amazing works on young people and older people! My favourite jobs are those we collaborate on together because I know I will learn and grow in my own skills working with them but also end up having so much fun along the way!!
How would you describe your teaching style in three words?
Technical, energetic, sequential
How would you describe your class and what can people expect from a class with you?
My classes are energetic and fun, there is a focus on strong technique but uses a variety of contemporary dance styles. I use long sequences that make use of the whole space, travelling in and out of the floor and the movement flows from one to the next. I would say I use a variety of music to make quality, dynamic and energy stand out in movement sequences.
What is your favourite Rambert work?
Easy question to answer – A Linha Curva, bold and energetic and a logistical brilliance!!!
