Meet the Teacher: Sonia Illescas
Trinity Laban | Graham Technique at Carmen Roche, Madrid | Laura Mas Classical Ballet School, Barcelona
First memory of dance
I was about 6. After school, I would have to go to Julias’s Gym and wait for my eldest sister to finish her dance class; it was a modern jazz style of the early 80s. There was an open window where you could sit and watch. The group was mixed age, all females and wearing the most sexy and outrageous colourful lycra costumes. The teacher must have noticed me trying to copy the moves, as she asked my mother if I could join the class. Oh well… you should have seen me later in the year performing ‘Electric Boogaloo’ with all the big girls and wearing a silver metallic leotard…
Right after that, they offered me a scholarship in Ballet training. Changed the metallic leotard for a pink one and never looked back. I was hooked.
Most inspirational teacher
For two years, I had the most inspirational Ballet teacher in Barcelona, so passionate that she would see technical movement in every day objects. She once taught me how to visualize my centre of gravity by placing a ping-pong ball on top of a water fountain… She was awesome.
