Meet the Teacher: Sonia Illescas

Where did you train / study as a dancer / teacher?
I started dancing Modern dance and Ballet at an early age in Ibiza where I was born. I continued my professional training in Ballet and Contemporary Dance in Madrid, at the Carmen Roche official conservatory- SCAENA where I studied Ballet and Graham Technique.I moved to London in 1996 to study at the Trinity-Laban Conservatoire for Music & Dance, and graduated with a contemporary dance and choreography postgraduate professional diploma specialising in Dance in Education and Community Dance.

Describe your most inspirational teacher
For two years, I had the most inspirational Ballet teacher in Barcelona, so passionate that she would see technical movement in every day objects. She once taught me how to visualise my centre of gravity by placing a ping-pong ball on top of a water fountain… She was awesome..

How would you describe your teaching style in three words?
Technical, musical, interpersonal and creative. Sorry that’s four!

How would you describe your class and what can people expect from a class with you?
No two weeks feel the same. Music inspires my movement and the exercises are a reflection of it. In my class you will improve your technique by learning the principles of Graham and Cunningham technique. You will have the chance to learn company repertoire fragments at the end of the class as well as some rhythmical contemporary phrases where you can express your musicality and work on your performing skills. I enjoy getting the best out of my students and sharing my passion for dance.

What is your favourite Rambert work?
It’s impossible to choose one! I feel really close to Christopher Bruce historical masterpieces like Swansong or Ghost dances; they fill me up with melancholy. My favourite recent works has to be Killer Pig performed by Rambert2, the commitment of the dancers was mesmerising
