Ballet: Beginners

Start from the complete beginning and learn the ballet basics. From the names of the steps to the movements, this class is suitable whether you’ve never taken a ballet class before, or perhaps you’ve been once or twice. Brenda Lee was a dancer in the Rambert Company for seven years and we love having her back in the studio.

Meet the Teacher

Nandita Shankardass is one of the few professional female ballet dancers of Indian heritage in the world. Trained at The Royal Ballet School, she was awarded the James Monahan Award and Ninette de Valois Award for her choreographic work as a student. Her career has taken her to perform with Zürcher Ballet, Victor Ullate Ballet, Ballet Black, Scottish Ballet and Compañia Nacional de Danza in a range of classical and contemporary repertoire. Nandita has choreographed for Zürcher Junior Ballet, Ballet Black, as a Young Choreographer for Compañia Nacional de Danza and for tve’s Global Sustainability Film Awards.

Nandita is the founder of Welcome Movement® offering a range dance and movement classes across all ages, backgrounds and abilities. She has taught across the UK, Europe and Asia including Rambert professional class, Ballet Black, Open Ballet and Creative Improvisation classes at Central School of Ballet and Danceworks in London and she facilitates movement for wellbeing for various community groups, projects and organisations.

Her approach to movement is holistic, guided and supported by imagination, sensation and experience to create empowered and embodied ways of moving. In her Ballet and Pointe work classes you will discover and understand a healthy approach to the technique which encourages supportive alignment, functionality and efficiency, focus, balance, coordination and strength to develop a deeper awareness within your body and in relationship to the space, all whilst moving with musicality.
