World Premiere: Rambert, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Leo Warner, Lolita Chakrabarti and 59 Productions at Manchester International Festival

Rambert is collaborating with choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Director Leo Warner, writer Lolita Chakrabarti and architects and artists 59 productions to create a major new production that interweaves dance, theatre, music and architectural design & projections for Manchester International Festival 2019.

Performed by Rambert’s dancers, with actors Danny Sapani as Kublai Khan and Matthew Leonhart as Marco Polo, Invisible Cities features design and projection by 59 Productions’ Olivier and Tony Award-winning team of architects, designers and animators.

With a score by Dustin O’Halloran and Adam Wiltzie of the ambient music duo A Winged Victory for the Sullen and soundscapes by award-winning Gareth Fry, this extraordinary new work will transport audiences through time and space.

Zenobia, a city of joy. Beersheba, a celestial city of gold. Isadora, a city of promise, seduction and desire. City by unseen city, the young explorer conjures from the ether a vast and spectacular empire – all for the benefit of its emperor, his master, who may never get to see it for himself…

Invisible Cities centres on the edgy relationship between Kublai Khan, the volatile head of a vast empire, and explorer Marco Polo, who must transcend a language barrier to describe it for him. This spellbinding mix of theatre, choreography, music, architectural design and projection mapping imagines a succession of alternative worlds – and reimagines what is possible in live performance.

Invisible Cities will see Manchester’s atmospheric venue, the Mayfield, transformed. The vast disused train depot will become a spellbinding mix of theatre, choreography, music, architectural design and digital projection, to create a succession of alternative worlds.

'Invisible Cities is exactly the kind of work we want to be creating at Rambert – distinctive, innovative and unexpected. I look forward to engaging new audiences through this collaboration with some of the most exciting names of dance, theatre and design today'

Benoit Swan Pouffer

Invisible Cities is at the Mayfield from Friday 5-Saturday 14 July 2019 (previews Tuesday 2 – Thursday 4 July). More information and tickets: https://mif.co.uk/whats-on/invisible-cities/
