Workshop Programme Case Studies
Constant Speed
In 2005 Artistic Director Mark Baldwin choreographed Constant Speed for the Company. The work was commissioned by the Institute of Physics to celebrate Einstein Year. A huge hit with audiences worldwide it has also been used extensively in workshops and residencies across the UK.
The work is suitable for a wide range of groups and has sparked significant interest from Science teachers. At the heart of the creative process were Einstein's theories of Brownian motion, special relativity and the photoelectric effect.
Its cross-curricular nature led to lots of interesting workshops, including the delivery of a bespoke lecture demonstration for the Teacher Scientist Network and workshops for young people at the BA Festival of Science.
To support teachers in their use of the work we a full-length film was made of the work in 2007 and is available for sale on DVD, as is a teacher resource pack.
Infinity
In 2007 the Australian choreographer Garry Stewart choreographed Infinity for the Company. The title Infinity refers to eternity and the aspirations that human beings have for an afterlife. The athletic nature of the choreography means that the workshops have a lot of energy and the variety of movement styles that influence Infinity enables participants to discover new and exciting ways of moving.
When creating Infinity Garry Stewart wanted the dancers to move not like humans but like creatures or otherworldly beings and tasks he used in the devising process have been used to develop the creative element of the workshops.
Swansong
In autumn 2007 Rambert dancer and JADE Fellow Simon Cooper is toured a new workshop programme to the UK's vocational dance schools. Christopher Bruce's Swansong returned to Rambert repertoire in October 2007 and having danced the role of one of the guards, Simon has worked with him to reconstruct the work with the current Company.
The workshop included a technique class, a performance of, and the opportunity to learn, selected sections from the work. It closed with a question and answer session about life and work as a professional dancer and managing a successful career as a dancer.
Rambert Animateurs also trained in Swansong and are available to teach workshops across the UK.
For the autumn 2008 tour we will be offering workshops on Swansong, Infinity, Eternal Light and Carnival of Animals.
