Working with Siobhan Davies - Virginia de Gersigny
Posted by: Stephanie Moore on 22 April 2008
Well, I'd firstly like to say how nice it has been working with Siobhan Davies (Sue) and also Sasha Roubicek (who's been assisting her). They've created a very relaxed, but productive atmosphere and are very aware of being in a dancer's position during the creation of a piece - which, as we know can sometimes be a long process, although very interesting and often very funny, especially when the subject matter is... ‘animals'.
So... getting to grips with the animal within, or should I say, with animals. The challenge has been to come up with movements that only contain subtle hints of the animal we are trying to be, and each one generally being teamed with another theme. For example in one of the sections that we have been working on we are doing the salsa, but whilst salsa-ing we have to somehow convey the fact that we are also chickens. Hmm.... yes, I think ‘challenge' is definitely the right word! But the process has been great fun, and luckily we have a South American among us (thank you Miguel) who has given us a crash course on how to salsa properly! We've also had Adam Cooper in to teach us the fine details of the Viennese Waltz, which involved a lot of treading on each others' toes! The Waltz will eventually be used in part of the Aquarium section.
Now that most of the tasking has been done and Sue has assigned the animals most suited to each person, so it's time to amalgamate the ideas that we've all been working on over the past few weeks. I'd say, as well as learning new dance skills, so far the experience has been a mixture of hard work, laughs and the frustration of trying to be a co-ordinated salsa-ing chicken!
