Working with Christopher Bruce - Estela Merlos
Posted by: on 24 March 2009
When I was at school I used to watch videos of Christopher Bruce's work all the time. One of my favourites was Ghost Dances. I always wanted to dance one of his works but I thought it would never happen. But here I am, dancing the part of the youngest daughter in Hush with Rambert. I still can't believe it; it is such a privilege!
Working with Christopher is an extraordinary experience for me. Every time he comes to rehearse I learn something new, not just about the execution of the steps, but also the reasons why he creates them. It is fascinating to see how he transforms human gestures, feelings and behaviours into dance movement. It all suddenly makes sense and it becomes ‘real' for us and for the audience.
Having just finished performing in Mold last week, we are about to première Hush in Newcastle tomorrow. I am excited and nervous at the same time, but really looking forward to the performances. I just hope I can transfer everything I have worked on in the studio to the stage.
