With Rambert once again - Christopher Bruce

Christopher BruceIn between rehearsals for Hush with the Rambert dancers I'm pondering over the crop rotation in my garden, and what to do with some felled trees I must deal with. Louise Lester, Houston Ballet, is here today and doing such a wonderful job I am momentarily redundant.

I'm taking the opportunity to stroll around the building here in Chiswick, looking at posters and other memorabilia; a trip down memory lane for me. After first joining Rambert as a dancer in 1963, I have been back and forth to the company in different roles, including Artistic Director from 1994 to 2002.

It has been interesting to see how the Rambert dancers have taken on the roles created by the Houston Ballet cast; some of them dropping into character immediately. There's no need to tell these dancers how to move off-balance and down into the ground as their contemporary dance training gives them this ability without them having to think about it.

Boy, do we need more space; we're working in a studio that is a third of the size of a Houston Ballet studio where we could work with three casts without any problems whatsoever. It's a very different story here in Rambert's studios, but the dancers cope well with this lack of space.
