The summer holidays are over - Otis-Cameron Carr
Posted by: Otis-Cameron Carr on 11 September 2009
Towards the end of last season I made a very conscious decision. This was to see how much activity and mileage I can cram into a four-week summer holiday. Not to brag, but I succeeded, and then some!
To further reiterate, my needing to do this was purely to exercise living life, which I'm sure you'll agree is generally quite essential. We as dancers often forget how lucky we are to possess a talent that allows us to have a job that involves creation, expression and exploration on a daily basis. It is very easy to dwell on the pain, fatigue and mental drainage which also happen to greet us daily. Not to lose my point, but making the most of my holidays has meant that I now come into work beaming as I feel (for the time being) fulfilled.
The start of the season bore new challenges for me, on a grand scale: I've been learning The Comedy of Change. To insert a pun here would be far too easy and so I will simply say there has been a lot of laughs, and a lot of change on my part. I'm totally new to the style of movement within the piece and have been working tirelessly to experiment with how I can execute the choreography without feeling like a clown. I am relishing the challenge of mastering the complex co-ordination skills required to do the piece justice. I'm glad to say, it helps to be surrounded by such talented dancers, as when you feel that something is just impossible a colleague manages to prove you wrong in the blink of an eye.
As well as The Comedy of Change I have gone into yet another new place this time in A Linha Curva which presents its own challenges. Fortunately I was present for half of the creative period so I'm familiar with the material and structure of the piece; but needless to say, watching and doing are two very different things. Last but not least is Tread Softly, which, if I say so myself, looks fantastic!
All of this work is geared towards the autumn tour which commences next week. I'm not usually one for confessions, however, I admit that I do not have the fondest feeling toward touring. The word activates alarm bells within my brain. To keep details to a minimum, I have toured twice now in the UK and in fitting with my life, the experiences have not been so great. But I am enthusiastic none the less as touring with Rambert Dance Company can only bring new experiences; what more could one want?
