Back from New York City - Angela Towler
Posted by: Angela Towler on 9 December 2011
It's already been four weeks since my trip to New York. What an amazing experience it was; I genuinely loved every minute of it. My hours were crazy and I saw nothing more than my hotel room and the venue, but it was worth it.
The actual event was a long day of non-stop organising. There was last minute choreography in the morning for a team of New York break dancers; great guys for whom we gave structure to their set, and also helped direct them: basically choreographing tricks and timings and helping find moments to bring the crowd in. The audience and competitors started arriving from 9.30am and were greeted with a lovely breakfast before preparing for their day. Our dancers had already been getting into hair and makeup from 8am. After their warm-up I took them onto the stage and catwalk for a final spacing. I think this is a good way to relax everyone. Knowing you have all come together and are focused as a group is a guarantee for a great show.
So the show started at 11am. Everyone was incredible; I felt so proud watching them. Their energy and professionalism were fantastic and it seemed like it was over in seconds, though it ran into early afternoon. Next we directed five other stages where our main models for each trend displayed the work of the teams. They had to be constantly rotated for photo opportunities and interviews. No time to stop, we then headed back to the main catwalk for another 2hr show; we then prepared our dancers for their evening appearance. The show was a huge success. I left Pier 94 in floods of tears! I was exhausted. I hugged them all then grabbed my case and ran to my car at 8pm to be taken to the airport. This upset me hugely as it took months of preparing (since May 2011) with endless meetings on graphic design, costume design, music production, conference calls, rehearsals etc and I had to leave them before it ended. I wanted to tell them all how brilliant they were but only had time to hug and run. I made my flight which was at midnight, but despite the tiredness I couldn't sleep at all. I kept going through all the events that had happened since landing in New York and not wanting to forget any part of it. I landed in London at 10am, jumped on the tube and ran straight into rehearsals in Chiswick.
