A lot has happened since Salford - Angela Towler
Posted by: Angela Towler on 9 November 2011
So, the last I wrote was that our visit to Salford was completed. A lot has happened since then. The Monday immediately afterwards I was sent home to rest and ice my foot whilst waiting for an appointment to see a specialist. The earliest available appointment was the following Monday.
All I could do was rest, ice and rest some more until we had a diagnosis. Thankfully it seemed we were having a mini heat-wave which helped keep my spirits up. My appointment was at Fortius Clinic where the wonderful Peter Rosenfeld immediately put me at ease. On introduction we went through my details and I confidently said I was 36.. forgetting I had just turned 37 the Friday before!!! My opening line to him was, 'whatever you tell me I need to be ok for November, well mid-October would be better;' he returned a smile and he started examining my foot. His touch was delicate as if listening to my bones. He was amazing. I was sent down for an x-ray and it was 7pm before I was being called to his room for my diagnosis. We looked at the x-rays together and to my surprise, and his, my foot looked good on the inside, completely different to how I imagined after all my 34yrs of dancing :-)
Peter said my foot looked really healthy, all joints were good and there wasn't a stress fracture!! He could see that my second toe had an old injury (fry bergs fracture) which I did as a child and was told back then it would heal itself; it has never caused me any problems. He suspected this joint was possibly pressing on a bursa causing it to bleed, which would explain the bruising across the front of my foot and the feeling of a stone underneath my foot when rising on demi-pointe. I was offered a steroid injection but as there was no uncomfortable pain and he couldn't reproduce the pain we decided to put it off and use it at a later date if needed. I felt like hugging him. As I walked out I said, 'I hope I don't see you again soon'. I'm sure I left the clinic with my smile stretching from ear to ear. I got straight on the phone to Caroline Jubb, our company physiotherapist, and also our rehearsal directors Simon and Mikaela, to give them the good news.
Touch wood my foot now seems to ok. I returned from our visit to Theatre Royal, Bath on Saturday night and woke early on Sunday to rehearse for my next project. In my summer break ex-Rambert dancer Martin Joyce and I held an audition looking for 12 dancers for an event in New York for Wella. They are hosting the international Trend Vision Awards there this year. We have been in meetings since May constantly presenting ideas for movement, music, costumes, graphics. Everything has to be signed off by the client, and quite rightly so, they are spending a lot of money. Just when you think you get the go ahead on something the idea changes which is slightly frustrating but challenging in a good way. We rehearsed at the TA Centre in White City, London, on Sunday and Monday. We needed a space that would help represent our true space in the venue... The TA Centre didn't even come close unfortunately but we still made it work.
I went into Rambert today for rehearsals of Javier De Frutos' Elysian Fields. Time is tight as I'm missing the rest of the week due to flying to New York tomorrow until next Monday. I'm not worried as I feel confident with what I'm doing, though I'm tired however thriving on excitement. I'm averaging 5-6hrs sleep a night at the moment because of the really early starts. I'm off to finalise my packing and hopefully get into bed before 1am.
