Hi Kat,
You may want to look at our Unmasked section of the website, specifically Hush: http://www.rambert.org.uk/unmasked/hush
In the videos Christopher also talks about his other pieces.
Don\'t miss the Q&A where there is even more from him.
I hope this helps,
Gill

927# Dissertation Research

By Kat on Tue, 26 April 2011 at 06:06:54 PM

Hello. I'm currently writing my dissertation on Political/Social influences on Comtemporary Artists and have of course selected Christopher Bruce as one of my subjects. I have chosen to focus on Ghost Dances and Hush.
He seems very hard to research and I was wondering if you could suggest any information sources? Queries I have include those such as:
When creating a piece, is he worried about offending the audience? Does he try to avoid doing so?
Is it difficult to find a balance between the importance of the message he's giving and maintaining a high standard of dance?
Why does he believe his pieces have been so successful?
etc.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Kind regards

Kat

Hi Jude,
Thanks for your post. Yes you are correct there is a music copyright factor to consider.

That aside, Rambert unfortunately has no plans to re-create Ghost Dances, for stage or for DVD, in the foreseeable future.

Best wishes, Gillian.

841# Ghost Dances TV version

By Jude on Mon, 7 February 2011 at 05:57:09 PM

Ghost Dances performed by Rambert was televised in the UK in 1999 from Sadler's Wells (I think). I still have a copy of it on video. Unfortunately, the recording doesn't have details of which channel it was on. I suspect it was BBC2. Perhaps some begging letters to the BBC might encourage a repeat showing... Is there some copyright reason why Rambert can't make their own version on DVD if there's a problem with the Houston Ballet one?

837# Ghost Dances - DVD

By Gillian - Web Manager on Wed, 12 January 2011 at 10:56:52 AM

Hi Sarah,
Unfortunately nothing has changed since my earlier post, copied here for you: "Many of you have requested that we produce a DVD copy of Christopher Bruce's Ghost Dances. You may already know that the film we sold on our website was danced by The Houston Ballet and was available on VHS. Earlier this year we looked into buying more stock to sell on our website and we were told that it has been discontinued due to an expired license. Although Ghost Dances was choreographed for Rambert, we were not involved in the production of The Houston Ballet film so we are not in a position to renew the license. I believe there is also a copyright issue with the music so I doubt that a straight forward re-license would occur.
I have just spoken to Christopher Bruce and as promised I passed on all of your comments. He understands your frustrations and is sorry he isn't able to do anything about the situation as it is out of his hands.
My advice would be to contact other companies that have performed Ghost Dances to see if they hold a copy. If we get further information in the future we will post it on our website and on Facebook."

Sorry it's not great news,
Gillian.

I watched the video of Ghost Dances at Laban when I trained back in the mid-eighties and was highly impressed with the whole piece - choreography & emotive feel of the piece. I would love to know if there is a DVD version available?

Hi Shirley, How lovely to receive a message from you, I hope your memories of your time with Ballet Rambert are good.
I'll pass on your message to Mark Baldwin, however I don't think we have any plans at present to add Winter Night to our repertoire; but you never know!
