185# Eternal Light
By Moira & Andrew on Sat, 18 October 2008 at 10:51:44 AM
Andrew thought the music took preminance over the dance. Moira thought they both went brilliantly together. The total concept was brilliant with the choreogrphy fitting with the music, lighting and costumes. The overall effect was stunning. On analysis the big bird needs to fly off. During this last section their were laughs, giggles quite a few rude comments about the toucan. The costume was brilliant but it did spoil the overall sensitivity of the work. ANdrew said it was like a pantomine dame entering Swan Lake! Well done to Mark and the company.
Wee bit about Swan Song. It always makes me cry no matter how many times I see it. It never ages.
Infinity I could live without! Pretentious.
As always Rambert dancers are the stars

One of the very worst performances of modern ballet I have ever seen. Swansong remains a strong piece for the company, more poignant now that in the intervening years since its commissioning.
But Infinity was almost without redemptive quality and Eternal Light was simply dreadful.
This performance lacked even the synchronicity of yesterday's matinee. Are the troupe simply too tired?
Rambert should look backwards into its archive for stronger work by earlier choreographers.

I had a thoroughly amazing night last night when going to see Rambert Dance Company.
They never fail to bring the new, timeless and up to date to dance lovers. What more could 'real' dance lovers ask for?
These dances are keeping the company up to date, even though sometimes the pieces can be controversial and you can't deny that's what Rambert do best.
Eternal Light was enjoyable, and well choreographed.
Really lovely partner work in this piece.
Swansong was thoroughly enjoyable, I have studied this piece many a time and was very impressed.
Infinity was beautifully performed, this performance wasn't understood fully, but it is really up to date stuff. Botuh is being studied and researched across universities and I think that people should research performances before labeling work 'One of the very worst performances of modern ballet I have ever seen'.
I too had problems getting into the performance, but on reflection and after researching the meaning of the piece I feel I am likely to give pieces like this more of a chance.
Come on Norwich, be more open minded!

I thought that Infinity was one of the best creative performances that I have seen for several years. It was hypnotic and breathtaking. I was disappointed to see that the theatre was not full for this as it unliklely that the audience will see anything as magnificent as this for several years
Please don't compromise your integrity just because some of the audience don't 'get it'.
Sadly Eternal Light did not match this brilliance - it felt rather cliched - both the music and the imagery.

we loved this ballet- except for the toucan's head, which I see is not in your picture. It hampered the dancer and lookes silly- but it could have been beautiful. We thought Infinity was stunning, original and exciting. And Swansong also was amazing, very moving. we always come to see Rambert, please keep Norwich on your list. Hilary and Lewis Davies

A wonderful evening. Eternal light started with too much fuss but gradually the choreography became more in tune with the music. Wonderful singing.
Swan Song was faultless and emotionally powerful. Congratulations to the dancers and all concerned with this wonderful piece.
Infinity was fun, making me think of protons and electrons, quarks and other minutae.
Thank you all for coming to Norwich and please visit again soon.

As usual it was a mind blowing performance. The highest quality of performance and as always, thought provoking.
I found Eternal Light intensely moving and the music and singing wove seamlessly into the dance. We have bought the CD of the music. A beautiful timeless piece.
Swan song I had seen before but it's impact seemed even greater.
Infinity was totally breathtaking !

This is the first time in many years that I've enjoyed the Rambert. We bought last minute tickets and thoroughly and unexpectedly enjoyed the programme. Infinity which was just so beautiful and and other-worldly, almost trancelike. Both of us could have stayed with it for longer (fabulous score).
Eternal Light I felt had wonderful moments (I agree that the bird was a bit panto and I had a bit of a Spinal Tap moment when the crucifixes descended!!) The score was rather more captivating than the dance (I was very aware of the dancers dancing to the music, as if they were accompanying it).
I guess I find it a bit disappointing that the audience was perhaps most appreciative of Swansong. I know you have to keep everyone happy somehow.
I would come to see you again as long as you don't do too much crowd pleasing!
Thank you.
