727# For Hannah: Swansong

By Stephanie Moore on Fri, 29 October 2010 at 11:05:23 AM

Hi Hannah, and thanks for your query. Here's a section from the programme note that Christopher wrote about the piece:
"My works generally contain a collage of ideas creating several possible narratives which I hope will trigger a personal and unique reaction in the spectator. One of the sources for Swansong's 'prisoner of conscience' theme was the novel A Man by Oriana Fallaci. I was particularly struck by the way in which the author describes torture and interrogation as if it were a theatrical production."

You can also hear more about Swansong in an extensive interview with Christopher in the Unmasked section of our website www.rambert.org.uk/unmasked/hush

I hope that helps.

I was wondering if you could give me some basic information on Swansong by Christopher Bruce, please? Such as: a bit about the story, or the inspiration behind it etc. I do not want to buy the Swansong study notes, thank you.

705# Reply for Tara, Swansong

Swansong was first performed by Rambert Dance Company at the Theatre Royal, Norwich, on 12 April 1995.' However, Swansong was first created and performed in 1987 - and not by Rambert.
Swansong was created for London Festival Ballet (now English National Ballet), and it was first performed at the Teatro Arriaga, Bilbao, Spain, on 25 November 1987,
I hope this is useful.

Hi Charlie
Thanks for your question. There are a variety of dance styles used in Swansong, often to create a particular effect. I would suggest buying the study notes on the work from the online Rambert shop - see menu on the left - which will give you more information on this and the wider context of the work.
I hope that helps!

585# For Laura Emily@ Swansong

By Stephanie Moore on Thu, 10 December 2009 at 05:24:58 AM

Hi Laura,
Christopher Bruce always wishes to leave interpretation of a work up to the spectator, but he mentions a variety of inspirations for Swansong one of which was the novel The Man by Oriana Fallaci, which looks at issues of torture and interrogation. I would suggest buying our Swansong study notes on the work from the online Rambert shop - see menu on the left - which will give you more information on this issue and the wider context of the work.
I hope that helps!
