Hi Mike, thanks for your question. In response we'd like to advise that there is no reference that Swansong responds to any political stance. In an interview Bruce stated that 'there were two basic inspiration points for which Swansong sprung. One is reading about and being very aware of the work of Amnesty International and wanting to say something about the prisoner of conscience. The other image was saying good-bye to something, and for me, it was saying goodbye to dance.'

There is no particular target audience for this work and it has been performed in countries throughout the world, to people of all ages and background.

839# Bruce as a political Practitioner

By Mike on Tue, 25 January 2011 at 01:05:58 PM

Swansong is openly political and responds to a Left Wing stance. However those who are truly Left Wing use more universal mediums than ballet and target a more working class audience. How does Bruce justify his target audience and and his medium of delivery?

831# Swansong, for Celeste & Ruby

By Gillian - Web Manager on Mon, 6 December 2010 at 10:23:07 AM

Hi Celeste & Ruby,
The cast of Swansong has varied over the years and by Company. Swansong is a Christopher Bruce piece which he first created for London Festival Ballet (now English National Ballet), although we have, as you know, performed it many times (with different dancers so there is not a set cast that I can tell you about); the same for Houston Ballet.
I do not know of a website with large amounts of information but you could try Houston Ballet, or buy our notes from our shop which are there to give as much information as we have.
I hope you find what you're looking for.
Best wishes,
Gillian.

Hi Jenna,
The video mentioned in the previous forum post should be of interest, Christopher talks about Swansong: http://www.rambert.org.uk/unmasked/hush Interview 2 (the third video), and there are Swansong study notes available in our online shop: http://cnb-host3.clickandbuild.com/cnb/shop/rambert-dance-co?listPos=2&productID=24&search=swansong&op=catalogue-product_info-null

I hope these will be useful.
