Hi Tabitha
Thank you for your interest and your lovely comment, I'm glad you're enjoying studying Rambert's work. Swansong was brought into Rambert's repertory in April 1995, having previously been performed by three ballet companies and the date and place you mention are correct. Swansong is performed by three male dancers and Christopher Bruce designed the set and costumes for Rambert. Study notes are available for more information at this link: http://cnb-host3.clickandbuild.com/cnb/shop/rambert-dance-co?listPos=4&search=swansong&op=catalogue-search
I hope this is useful.
Best wishes

Hi I am studying dance for GCSE and Swansong is one of the topics could you please tell me the number of dancers used, who designed the set and who designed the costumes? I am throughly enjoying researching your work and think I am right in stating that it originally premiered on 25th November 1987 at Bilbco. Kind regards

Hello Robert.
Each dancer has their own fitness routine - many start the day with yoga, some like to run or cycle, and in addition to daily technique classes the company provides optional fitness classes a couple of times a week which normallly consist of circuit training. When the repertoire requires we also provide other types of training - for example tumbling/acrobatics.
Some of the dancers have gym memberships but it is very unlikely that they would visit a gym on a daily basis in addition to their work with the company. Rambert has a small fitness studio with a pilates reformer and various weights and gym equipment which the dancers have access to whenever they feel the need.
The company does not set specific fitness targets but all dancers need to be in the best possible shape to cope with the pressures of the job, and we have a number of professional experts who work with us from time to time in addition to the regular work of the Company Physiotherapist and our preferred Sports Massage Therapist.
The company does not prescribe dietary patterns - each dancer takes responsibility for their own health and fitness with access to guidance and help where needed.
I hope this answers your questions - thank you for your interest.

Obviously the dancers go through a warm up routine prior to undertaking any dancing.Your new home will be fitted out with the latest gym & physio equipment. My questions are, do the dancers spend a certain amount of time in the gym on a daily basis? Do they exercise as a group or individually? Does the Company insist that the dancers achieve & maintain certain levels of fitness? Also does the Company insist that certain dietary patterns are followed? Does Rambert employ such professionals(dieticians/fitness instructors/physio`s)to implement such care?

Dear Stephanie,
Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I am currently in my second year of a BA Hons degree in Dance Education and one of my modules this semester is Dance Analysis. I have chosen the Victim's final solo for my analysis so I should be most interested to hear anything further that Simon Cooper might have to say. Thank you again.

Dear Cherry,
Thanks for your question, and I'm really pleased that you enjoyed the performance of Swansong so much. Choreographer Christopher Bruce spent some time at Rambert's studios in late summer 2007, to choose the casts and work with them on remounting the piece. He told us at the time, "They need to have a number of dance skills for the roles, but also have to be good actors as well. The thing I love about Rambert is that the dancers train in contemporary dance as well as ballet, it gives them incredible versatility and enables them to move in a completely unique way." Rehearsal Directors Vincent Redmon and Simon Cooper (both of whom had previously appeared in the work) taught the actual steps to the dancers. This allowed Christopher to devote his energy to directing the work. Simon is out on tour at the moment but I have asked him if there is anything further he can tell us about the use of video/notation, which I will post on here at a later date.
I hope this goes some way to answering your question, and thank you for your continued support of the Company.
Best wishes

I am a mature student currently in my second year of a BA Hons degree in Dance Education. I first saw Swansong 20 years ago at the Connaught Theatre in Worthing and last ight I saw the revival at the Thesatre Royal in Brighton. In the intervening years I have watched it many times on video/DVD. I would be interested to know please who coached the current cast and whether they used notation.video/DVD. I appreciate just how hard it must be to combine incredibly difficult choreography with the acting ability required to create such a chilling atmosphere. It was a excellent performance, enhanced maybe by the improvements in training over the last 20 years? Thank you

Hello,
Has this dance been challenging for you?
If so, what has been the most difficult thing for you as dancers?
Thanks :)
