Mid-tour, various thoughts

Posted by: Mark Baldwin on 10 March 2010

I really enjoyed Scotland which is still fresh in my mind having just returned from Aberdeen on Saturday evening. I was twice asked for my autograph having been seen on So You Think You Can Dance. I am very surprised how many people watched it. Even in the Italian restaurant over the road from the theatre the Sicilian Maître d' had seen me on "tele". Oh well, back to touring (the heart and soul of our activities).

Jonathan Goddard, The Art of Touch © Hugo GlendinningThis week, Mold sees even more of the Rambert dance artists making their debut in The Comedy of Change. Estela Merlos goes on in the role originally made for Angela Towler. By the way, Angela was amazing in The Art of Touch which premièred in Aberdeen, and I got to meet her sweet and lovely parents who came to the performance and to watch class the following day. It was wonderful to see Angela Towler, Eryck Brahmania, Jonathan Goddard, Gemma Nixon, Kirill Burlov, Robin Gladwin and Pieter Symonds so fleet and musically expansive in our Aberdeen première of The Art of Touch which closed the evening. Special thanks to Kenny Burke who taught the last class of the run in Aberdeen, fun and rousing, I love the way he rolls his ‘r's in words like ronde de jambe, arm and a teree.

After sustaining some injuries the Company is back on form, still Stefano and Dane are mending (and much missed) but soon to be back. Dane did appear in the matinée class and in A Linha Curva in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Interestingly this period has woken up his inner choreographer and I've seen him spending creative time devising movement whenever the stage is free. Our new composer in residence, Gavin Higgins, is making friends with the dancers and spreading good cheer about new music and working with composers.

We have two new dancers joining the Company in the summer, look out for more information about them. Beautiful additions, one male, one female, with pedigrees and experience.
