Choreography Fellow

Award-winning choreographer and dancer Hemabharathy Palani joins Rambert as the second recipient of the Leverhulme Choreography Fellowship. The second of three fellows to be appointed, Hemabharathy is spending a year working part-time with Rambert exploring and developing her choreographic practice.

Hemabharathy is a prominent figure amongst emerging contemporary choreographers in India.

Known for her fluidity and musicality, she is a dynamic choreographer and performer, deriving a remarkable grace from her classical training in Kuchipudi under Guru Smt. Sunanda Devi and Guru Smt. Vyjayanthi Kashi, and Bharatanatyam under Guru Smt. Minal Prabhu. Her work is deeply personal and evocative, with movements richly textured with elements from her further training in ballet, contemporary dance, Kalaripayattu, yoga and capoeira at the Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts.

Currently, Hema is the Rehearsal Director at the Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, Bengaluru, where she also works as a choreographer, teacher, and performing artist with the Attakkalari Repertory Company.

Hemabharathy choreographs and performs in this short film inspired by India’s plans for space exploration, created for Channel 4’s Random Acts series as part of Big Dance India.

About the Choreography Fellowship

The Leverhulme Choreography Fellowship was launched in 2016 as part of Rambert’s commitment to developing future generations of artists. Rambert’s talent development programme also includes a successful music fellowship and a long running choreographic development programme that nurtures emerging dance-makers from both within the company and the wider dance sector.

This fellowship programme, supported by a grant from the Leverhulme Trust, helps professional dancers make the transition to become full-time working choreographers. The first Leverhulme Choreography Fellow was Julie Cunningham, who has since been appointed a Rambert Associate.
