Rafael Bonachela

Rafael Bonachela is a highly-acclaimed international choreographer with a reputation for creating exciting and expressive dance works. Rafael started his early dance training in his hometown of Barcelona before moving to London in 1992 to join Rambert as a performer. He later became an Associate Choreographer for the company until 2006, when he left to pursue his personal ambitions – creating Bonachela Dance Company and laying the groundwork for his independent choreographic career.

Rafael has been commissioned to make pieces for several international dance organisations, including Candoco Dance Company, Transitions Dance Company, George Piper Dances, ITDANSA Danza, Contemporanea de Cuba, and Dance Works Rotterdam. He has reached vast audiences through his collaborations with popular music artists Kylie Minogue and Tina Turner, and with fashion designers Dion Lee and Toni Maticevski.

In 2008 he premiered his full-length production 360° for Sydney Dance Company and was appointed Artistic Director shortly after. He has made several successful dance works during his tenure in Sydney and has received many prestigious awards, including an Officer’s Cross of the Order of Civil Merit by His Majesty the King of Spain. Rafael was named Most Interesting Australian Choreographer (2013) and Most Outstanding Chorographer (2012) by Dance Australia Critics’ Survey.
